Doing CPR in a COVID-19 Era

Still saving lives!

While many things have changed due to COVID-19, the need for CPR training has not! However, industry standards have changed to fit the safety protocols that are ever evolving. For example, the breathing component to CPR has been put on hold. That means we no longer practice the B (breathing) in the CAB sequence in a training scenario. This is where up to date videos and proper guidance by a skilled CPR instructor is necessary for students to get the best comprehensive learning experience possible. Hands-on or compression only CPR is a recommended method for performing CPR on a patient if the rescuer doesn’t feel comfortable delivering breaths to a patient or if the rescuer lacks Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect themselves from communicable diseases. This method of training is the new industry standard offered in classroom training for basic CPR training during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, training instruction and practice with an ambu bag breathing device used in our BLS (Basic Life Support) classes, taken by those who work in advanced medical facilities, is still in place. This device does not require any mouth to mouth or actual human breaths to be delivered by a rescuer to a patient. The important thing to know is that industry professionals are STILL training students to save lives in the event of an emergency. As long as the need for CPR still exists, CPR, AED, first Aid training will remain available.
