What is an AED?
An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is used to aid patients who are experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It’s a sophisticated life saving device, but easy enough for a layperson to use in the event of an emergency. An AED is a medical device that analyzes the patient’s heart rhythm and will deliver an electrical shock if the patient’s heart is in ventricular fibrillation (abnormal rhythm) to help bring the heart back to a regular rhythm.
Where are AED’s located?
AED’s are common to see in high population areas or in facilities with higher than normal risk of sudden cardiac arrest incidents. Hospitals, malls, gyms, schools, airports, community centers, casinos, doctor/dental offices, state buildings, and other local businesses are just a few locations where AED’s are common.
Can I get an AED for my home?
Yes, in fact many AED manufacturers are developing devices that are more affordable and easier to use to attract more customers to purchase an AED for home use. You do not need a prescription for an AED. The easiest way to find the right AED for your home would be to research the various units online.
How much do AED’S cost?
The price point ranges typically from $1,000 to $3,000. That may seem like a lot of money for a piece of technology you hope to never use, however, it can be one of the most important components to a resuscitation attempt and greatly increase the chance of survival for a sudden cardiac arrest patient by as much as 80%. Checking prices by a variety of manufacturers via online or by visiting a local medical supply company is a good place to start an AED search.
